St.Stephen's artists
Calling all local artists!

arts and crafts day

We know from the Arts and Crafts Fairs that we have many talented people in St. Stephen’s and our new venture on the website is to offer a platform where residents can share information about their arts and crafts with their neighbours.

If you are a jeweller, a quilter, a wood turner, a basket maker or any other type of artist, do let us know how others can contact you as this page aims to be a vehicle to showcase some of the talents of our local artists outside of the Arts and Crafts Fairs, from photography to stitchery, pottery to paper crafts and artwork of all kinds. For those of us who lack the artistic talents that we see in others, it may give us an opportunity to find something really special for a gift or for that gap on the mantelpiece!

Please take a look at some of the offerings of our local residents and take the opportunity to visit their own websites to see more of their work and learn more about them.

If you'd like to share some of your work here and a link to your own website, then please feel free to contact us via the form on the contact page on this website.

Oliver Enwonwu

Oliver Enwonwu is a local St.Stephen's artist working in oil on canvas.

Born in 1975, Oliver Enwonwu comes from a long line of artists; his grandfather was a reputable traditional sculptor and his father Ben Enwonwu MBE, widely celebrated as Africa’s pioneer modernist.

Strongly figurative, Enwonwu’s art interrogates the complex layers of history between the African continent and the West, with portraiture playing a huge part in his oeuvre. He addresses the near absence of Black personages in accounts of Western art history by adapting 16th century Old Masters’ modes of representation and techniques of painting as well as classical poses that imbue an air of power, regality and pride in the sitter.

Comprising mainly of the ‘Body of Power’, ‘Signares’, ‘Belle of Senegal’, and ‘Wanderers’ series, his portraits are of subjects not always known personally to him and are often idealistic; completely invented or recalled from memory. However, a connecting thread runs through the series evidenced by the fact that the figures all appear confident and their gaze remarkedly self-contained and unabashed. In tribute to his late father, Enwonwu’s incursion into the metaphysical is marked by his series based on mythological characters as exemplified by Anyanwu, contemporary interpretations of traditional African dance and the Onitsha-Igbo masquerade pantheon.

Oliver Enwonwu has been well exhibited in his home country Nigeria, UK, and the US. Selected exhibitions include: Best of Africa FIN/Forbes Awards Reception/Celebration of Mandela’s Legacy, organised by Kiribaku Art, London (2023); Found, Signature African Art, London (2022); Modern and Contemporary African (MOCONA) Arts Exhibition and Auction, Lagos (2022); Politics of Representation, Alliance Française Lagos (2021); Healing our Humanity, Finding Hope, Love and Unity, Steffen Thomas Museum, Atlanta (2021); and AfroSoul’: ACADA Contemporary African Diaspora Art Exhibition (2020).
